The painting depicts Shakyamuni at the moment of Enlightenment at Bodhgaya, indicated by his earth touching gesture, recalling the moment when he calls upon the earth goddess to bear witness to his self-transformation and he then become the Buddha. Here, Shakyamuni is flanked by two Bodhisattvas, Avalokiteshvara to the viewer’s right and likely Maitreya, as the white figure, symbolizing the compassion and wisdom aspects of enlightenment.
